Increasing equanimity is not about becoming better at changing emotions and always feeling positive. It means to increase our capacity to feel and become better at how we relate to our emotions.

It helps us experience life with a more even-minded state with clarity and respond to the” ups and downs” and challenges of life events and conditions without being overly reactive and impulsive.

Research has shown that meditation can change the brain’s structure and function in several different ways to help us cope with overwhelming emotions.  Studies show the brain’s “fight or flight” center, the amygdala, appears to shrink with meditation practice.   This primal region of the brain, associated with the emotions like fear, is involved in initiating our body’s response to stress.  On top of that, as the amygdala shrinks, the pre-frontal cortex – associated with executive/ higher order brain functions such as awareness, concentration, and decision-making – becomes thicker.

The key is to practice often, the same way you train your muscles to expand the capacity. Body scan meditation is one of the techniques to help us expand our awareness and capacity to feel.
